East Ellijay, GA – Sept 24, 2025 – House Of Applejay Distillery is calling all hikers, explorers, and photography lovers to join the Appalachian Big 5 Photo Challenge, a unique outdoor adventure celebrating the wild spirit of the Southern Appalachians.

The Big 5 isn’t just for Africa—our own Appalachian wilderness is home to five remarkable creatures: the black bear, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, bobcat, and coyote. This fall, participants are invited to head out on the trails, keep their eyes (and cameras) ready, and capture their own encounters with these iconic animals.

How It Works:

From October 10th to December 31, 2025, adventurers can hike at their own pace and explore North Georgia’s scenic trails where these animals roam. Snap a photo when you spot one of the Big 5, share your journey with friends, and stop by House Of Applejay Distillery in East Ellijay to pick up a free Appalachian Big 5 sticker—while supplies last.

“This challenge is about more than just hiking,” says Caroline Porsiel, founder of House Of Applejay. “It’s about slowing down, reconnecting with nature, and celebrating the animals that have always been part of Appalachian lore. And yes—sometimes having a little spirit with you in the wilderness makes the adventure even better.”

Why the Big 5?

Each of these animals holds a special place in Appalachian culture. The black bear symbolizes strength, the deer grace and endurance, the turkey pride, the bobcat mystery, and the coyote resilience. Together, they represent the untamed essence of the Southern mountains.
